This month we meet up with one of our boutique designer jewellers from the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, Jeff Einstein. Although now firmly a proud and award winning member of the Australian Jewellery industry, Jeff’s love of jewellery started at a young age in his homeland South Africa.

Tell us the story of how you established Jeff Einstein Jewellery?

‘After completing my jewellers apprenticeship in the early 1970’s, I secured my first position as an inhouse jeweller and designer for a very upmarket store in Johannesburg where I had grown up. In 1979 I established my own small workshop and Jeff Einstein Jewellery was born. I was fortunate that we were so busy that in 1985 we opened my first retail boutique that had an onsite workshop with jewellers on the bench.

In 1989 my wife and I made the decision to immigrate to Australia with our young family and so the business was sold. This meant starting again in our new home city of Sydney. I gained experience within the Australian industry and in 1992 Started working from a workshop at my home where I also employed other jewellers on the bench. By 1993 I was able to open my first retail boutique in Double bay which is the suburb where we are still located today.’

What would be your dream fantasy piece of diamond jewellery to create?

‘That’s a hard question as there are so many types of pieces that are perfect for showcasing diamonds. I would love the opportunity to create a tiara or crown purely for the fact that so few of these pieces are made today and looking back to jewellery design of the past there is so much to inspire a piece of jewellery of this scale and importance.’

What trends are you seeing in diamond jewellery in 2022?

‘It has been wonderful to see so many people appreciating the fancy shapes and various colours that diamonds come in. There has also been a return to yellow gold as the metal of choice. Many trending designs have accents of small fancy shape diamonds which creates interest and individuality.’

What is your advice to anyone looking to purchase a diamond?

‘I would always ensure that you receive an guarantee that the diamond you are purchasing has been ethically sourced. I would also stress how important it is to be able to view a gem in person prior to purchasing to appreciate the ‘soul’ of the diamond. Choosing to buy a diamond from a jeweller who is a member of Diamond Guild Australia will always assure this.’

What do you enjoy about working with diamonds?

‘I love that no two diamonds are exactly alike. From a design point of view, today there are so many wonderful shapes and colours in diamonds to inspire our designs. It is great to have the opportunity to select some of the more unusual diamonds and then to be able to handcraft pieces to showcase them.’
